Pushing Me (to the) Well
She thought rightly; I didn’t.
And I didn’t think she needed another friend.
She did.
I didn’t think I needed another friend.
I did. But of a different sort.
And so began a relationship unlike any other I’ve known.
Two things about her changed my life:
- I would talk to her and share something, and her response would almost always begin with, “Well, Jesus said…,” or “Theresa, the Bible says…”
- When I would run into her throughout my day, she would ask, “What is God teaching you?” or “What did you read today in the Bible?”
She loved the God of the Bible more than anyone I had ever met. To have His Word was such a treasure to her. She knew it well; she used it well.
And she helped me know it better and use it better.
The result of her responding to me with wisdom from the Word helped me come to a place where I value what the Bible says more than my own opinion or idea. To think rightly about a situation is to think according to the Word of God. To offer help and wisdom to a person is to offer the wisdom of the Bible.
Asking me what I was learning or what I read lit a fire under me and helped me wake up every morning and seek the face of God in Christ, as revealed through the scriptures. She would ask. And what would I say? “Uh, I was too lazy to read today.” Her spurring me on brought me to a place where I couldn’t imagine not drinking of the Word everyday.
She pushed me to the well. And God proved deeply satisfying and thirst-quenching.
Her life said, “Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.” Isaiah 2:5
